According to a recent report published in JAMA Oncology, mastectomies may not be necessary for a stage zero breast cancer diagnosis. Over 50,000 women a year are informed they have a very early stage of breast cancer.
At Stage Zero
a precursor, possibly, to developing cancer, doctors and patients are rapidly jumping into breast removal. Researchers are now questioning whether the surgery is absolutely necessary.
Scared To Life
Afraid of dying, women diagnosed with stage zero may be over-treating—a lumpectomy or removal of the abnormal cells is showing the same success.
It’s a Tumor…
but it may not be deadly. The study followed 100,000 women for 20 years. They found that treatment made no difference in their outcome. The good news is that many premalignant conditions may never develop into a cancer that will threaten women’s lives.
