What Is It?

This H7Test is used to detect E. coli 0157:H7, one of the most common sources of food poisoning. It uses a bioengineered organism that scientists named NanoLuc. This organism is derived from deep-sea shrimp. NanoLuc produces an enzyme that causes E. coli to glow.
Why It’s Better Than Other Tests
Other methods can’t detect if there are only a couple E. coli in a sample. Instead, scientists have to culture the bacteria so they grow and multiply before they can be seen. This new H7Test, however, can drastically speed up this process. Scientists can now detect E. coli before this enrichment process is finished!
Ways to Avoid and Treat E. coli
Of course, the H7Test won’t always be administered before it’s too late. So how can you avoid getting food poisoning? The key is always being careful to wash your hands and fresh produce. E. coli is often found in lettuce and ground beef. See this article on how to safely handle meats.
If you do get infected, be sure to drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Unless your doctor advises, don’t take anything to treat diarrhea. Some medications can actually keep your intestines from getting rid of E. coli. However, you may need an IV if you’re too dehydrated.
